Thumma is exactly how you say "then" sequentially. An is the word that is sometimes but not always sequential and can mean so, then, or and.

ok here is explanation: basically it says “he made the earth then formed the heavens into seven” this doesnt mean the quran says earth is made first, rather it says that after the creation of the earth, the heavens became divided into 7, hope this helped u understand

I don't know if you'll ever get to read this, but I consider it my duty to say it here
I implore you. Whenever you try to criticize Islam and Quran, do it with one pure intention.... That you want to reach the truth. Do not try to criticize Islam and Quran just for the sake of finding mistakes in it. If you have this intention, that whatever you're doing is because you want to reach the absolute truth of God....then you'll reach it. Regardless of what faith you belong to, just have this intention

However, I must also warn you. If you sit down and study Islam and Quran to find mistakes, only for the purpose of finding mistakes and ridiculing the religion.... Then you won't find any benefit at all. Unless Allah wills otherwise

هُوَ الَّذِىۡ خَلَقَ لَـكُمۡ مَّا فِى الۡاَرۡضِ جَمِيۡعًا ثُمَّ اسۡتَوٰۤى اِلَى السَّمَآءِ فَسَوّٰٮهُنَّ سَبۡعَ سَمٰوٰتٍ‌ؕ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَىۡءٍ عَلِيۡمٌ
It is He Who hath created for you all things that are on earth; Moreover His design comprehended the heavens, for He gave order and perfection to the seven firmaments; and of all things He hath perfect knowledge. 2:29 quran

I don't know if you know this
But tafsirs have both views
So quoting the tafsirs quoting one opinion as evidence is cherry picking
Unless the other view is a minority fringe opinion

Or you give evidence to your claim

And by the way
Ibn kathir literally also states the view that ramzi said (ie thumma isn't chronological)
So no he isn't lying

Several Classical Commentators also support this view,

Hafiz ibn Kathir (14th Century) writes:
Some scholars have said that in this Ayah the word “thumma” relates only to the order of reciting the information being given, it does not relate to the order that the events being mentioned took place. In other words we say, here it doesn’t mean that heaven is created after earth rather the intention here is only to recite the information that heavens and earth both are created. It is also supported by Arabic poetry, in many instances “thumma” is used only to recite the information being given, it does not relate to the order that the events being mentioned took place. [9]

Imam Fakhr al Din al Raze (12th Century) writes:
The word “thumma/then” is not here for chronological order, but merely to enumerate blessings. It is like when one man says to another: “Did I not give you great benefits, then raised your status, and then repelled your opponents?” It may be that some of what he mentioned later took place first. The same can be said here. [10]

Imam Qurtubi (13th Century) writes:
The word “Then” is simply a narrative aid and does not imply any time sequence in the matters referred to. [11]

Imam Baydawi (13th Century) writes:
Perhaps the word “then” (thumma) here is to indicate the disproportion between the two creations and the greater merit of the creation of the heavens over the creation of the Earth. This is like when Allah says: “Then (thumma) he had been among those who believed”. This is not to indicate its occurring later chronologically. [12]

Scholar like Al-Zamakhshari (11th Century, whose commentary is known for its deep linguistic analysis of the verses and is considered as a primary source by all major scholars) also supports this view. Keep in mind that these commentators lived a long time ago. They had no reason to worry about the scientific implications that we worry about today, because our current scientific knowledge about the formation of the universe and planets was not around back then. They were only concerned with the linguistic meaning of these verses and were speaking from a purely linguistic perspective according to the principles of the exegesis of Qur’an (Usool at-Tafsir).

And now that I am dome bringing tafsirs
The evidence from the verse itself
Read the verse carefully

It says God directed himself to the heavens
This literally means it was already there 🤦‍♂️

As usual they would say " it cannot be translated, you have to read it in arabic" .Apparently arabic is is the only language in the world that cannot be translated.
