The Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, officially known as the Tariff Act of 1930, was a U.S. law that raised tariffs on over 20, 000 imported goods to record levels. Sponsored by Senator Reed Smoot and Representative Willis C. Hawley, the act aimed to protect American businesses and farmers during the onset of the Great Depression by increasing import duties. However, it led to retaliatory tariffs from numerous countries, causing a significant decline in international trade and exacerbating the global economic downturn. The act is widely regarded as having worsened the Great Depression by reducing American exports and imports by more than half during the early 1930s.
