My squad leader was a large black man who married a Dutch woman. He went to her hometown, which had a very black people living in it. On Dec. 5th, he was mobbed by a large group of people thinking he was Black Peter.

I love how Greensleeves is playing in the background.

One thing bothers me though:
I've been into Greek mythology for a very long time and never once read anything about a world tree there. The world tree appears in Norse mythology and is named Yggdrasil, but there is none in Greek mythology. Golden apple trees and stuff, yes. A world tree, no.

I'm from Portugal. I believe what you tried to mention was "Consoada" (Christmas' Eve or the night before December 25). But it's just a regular celebration, nothing creepy involved. I have no idea how that story came about (?).

Very interesting video. It is amazing to learn about what other cultures believe around the world. It is also amazing what we will tell our children so that they behave lol

Fun fact, no one is actually sure of the origins of zwarte piet (black peter).

Some believe they are the inhabitants of a starving Turkish village who joined St. Nicholas after he persuaded a tradesman to let him take as much as of his merchandise from the tradesman's boat as long as the boat's weight remained the same(they drew a line on the boat and emptied the boat but it didn;t rise) so the thankful villagers joined the saint. It is believed that they are black because they enter and leave houses through the chimney to leave presents or coal for children (depending on their behaviour) resulting in them being covered in soot and ashes.

Once I heard was that they are descendants of a Scandinavian tribe whose warriors painted their bodies black.

There are also people who believe they were freed slaves who joined St. Nicholas.

In the very least, setting a plate for bygone loved ones doesn't seem that far fetched. How many people toast the departed . Personally I think that dead people liked to be remembered .
