You also got to think that all their wealth AND most military power came from the peasantry.

Not only did they provide the lord with coin and products such as food or tradable goods They were the backbone of the lords armies via militias. Without them the lords were done for so why would they try and fight or upset the people that provide them everything all the time.

I am not a feudalist but,
People didn't owe fealty to the King, they owed it to the law & if a lord or the King did infringe someone's rights they could just go to war with him. In fact peasant family households were even asked if they felt the lord/King had broken the law. They memorised most of the laws, mainly because they were simpler & shorter. Kings had less power than modern MPs. The whole theory of law comes from thinkers like Thomas Aquinas who say "Everyone has to follow the state's law just as everyone has to follow God's law regardless of whom they are"
