THIS IS NOT A DOOMER TAKE! I DON'T THINK CHATGPT IS SENTIENT OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. THE SHOGGOTH METAPHOR IS JUST THAT! A METAPHOR!!! Are large language models like ChatGPT just shoggoths with smiley faces? Shoggoths are Lovecraftian monsters that are big and solve their problems with their size and strength. AI researchers refer to LLMs as shoggoths as a part meme, part truth. Large language models are great at solving problems through their sheer size alone. In an unsupervised state like GPT-3, they are aliens with many faces, unexplainable by humans. When given human feedback, they seem to put on a smiley face mask that hides their many other eyes. Helpful on the surface, monstrous and untamed below it.
