Thomas "Pegleg" Smith was a mountain man during the 1820s. During a skirmish with Indians while trapping fur, Thomas' leg was shot and needed to get removed.

Later in life, he stole horses within Southern California with Ute Indians, fellow mountain men, and rebellious MIssion neophytes.

While tracking through the desert near Anza Borrego, Thomas found black covered gold nuggets. He took what he could carry and went off to San Francisco.

During the early half 20th century, treasure hunters and gold seekers began their search for this legendary lost gold. Some say they found it and others are still looking for Pegleg's riches.

Here is a twist to his story for the 21st century.
