I hadn't considered the lack of pronouns in 'August'. It might just be coincidence due to it being written in 1st/2nd person but I think it's supposed to be the other woman from 'Betty' reminiscing about her summer fling with James, so the lack of gender-specific 3rd person reference lends further abiguity to 'Betty'. ('Cardigan' is Betty's view, completing the trilogy of songs about that love triangle.)
