The Europa Clipper mission is embarking on an in-depth exploration of Jupiter's moon, Europa, where conditions might support life. This spacecraft will journey 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion km) to arrive at Jupiter by April 2030. Once there, it will enter an orbit around Jupiter and perform 49 detailed flybys of Europa to study its potential for life.

NASA is launching this Discovery Class mission on SpaceX's Falcon Heavy. The rocket will be fully expended to unleash all the performance from Falcon Heavy necessary for a mission to Jupiter.

I remember a time when Falcon Heavy was the most exciting space launch we had. Oh boy had the bar been raised.

This is actually some cool stuff. Someone remind me in 7 years to come back and check on this when the thing finally reaches its destination

I hope the world keeps launching amazing missions like these at pace. I'm only 49 years old now, but I'd like to see the outcomes of many more missions in my time, and space exploration is a slow game. Amazing effort though, and respect to SpaceX for the engineering, NASA for the science and dedication, and the people of the US for funding this type of scientific exploration.

Is it a great time to be a fan of rockets. Space X is entertaining the heck out of us these days between Star Ship, Falcon Heavy, and Falcon launches. Thanks Everyday Astronaut for all the hard work you and the team are doing to put us in a great seat on this roller coaster of a ride!

Clipper probe weight is 13, 000 pounds and even though Falcon Heavy is very capable, the probe has to be carefully crafted to minimize weight, be folded up to fit the nosecone, ETC. Imagine the capability of probes that won't have to make many compromises (if any) if they are placed on their trajectory by the Starship system with a payload capacity of over 200, 000 pounds.

In the opening segment, I remember watching the Apollo and the Saturn and the space shuttle launches. I lived in Pompano Beach and would drive up to watch him and it was truly amazing to feel the roar of those engines so far away.

People don't realize how big the Universe is. That it takes YEARS just to get to one of the planets in our solar system tells you how huge it is.

That thing is quick! 8G+ acceleration. It was moving before it left the tower even!

Funny how the best reusable rocket is now also the best disposable rocket.

I’m looking forward to a test of launching the same booster and two Starships on the same day!

Tim - I so wish you could've shown the SpaceX Telemetry on the screen. That's definitely Missed. Why NASA doesn't also provide it creates more questions about them than answers.

If you think it`s rough for you now, imagine trying to live stream a Space Shuttle launch. As a 12 year old kid my dad and I went down there 3 times to see a launch, but it was worth it.
