Just started the video. The song is sounding pretty good before you've even done anything to it. Nice writing and performances. I'm eager to see how you improve it. These livestream mix sessions are my favorite thing you do. I always get inspired to jump back into my own stuff.

Thanks for this beautiful and versatile example!
Take care for your health, I guess we all are facing a change of paradigm, my allergies are back since a couple of years, though I got that individually-tuned "desensibilize" decades ago and it had worked. Some very aromatic tea from certain plants seems helpful.

About a problematic snare from a live recording,
I insert it 3 times in 3 mix channels, and pre-select frequencies for each: Each starts with a 6-order Chebyshef hipass to clean up, try 108, 170, 290Hz. Then, each channel gets rigorously gated (with some threshold automation). Then, I mainly use a _resonant_ hipass (what works best is SFilter, sounds very physical, but it's legacy tech), and with this I select a deep body tone (like 145Hz) plus some higher ringing frequencies, try 290;1250Hz. The Q setting is crucial, it makes each of the selected frequencies ring as much as needed, even when it was very dead in the original. Then each gets a Channel X instance with its insane compressor and Pultec-style EQ, and then they get different insert reverb settings from some mad algorithmic plugin that has strong modulation. The highest ring gets the longest reverb. This will sound very "live". So I have full tail control for 3 different components, all derived from the one mic that was available. Seems to sound better than samples, and the playing sounds super dynamic and colorful, without creating level problems later in the chain.
But there is another component, in my example there was only a snare top mic, and a kick-in mic, and the latter also was able to deliver the snare carpet sound, in an extra DAW channel, gated to the snare bottom skin frequency. I used an elliptic hipass at 2k, and the BlackBox HG-2 saturator to distort it and give it some bright resonance.
Practically, you can print these, and use only the faders and a snare bus EQ for the real mixing.
Down in the routings, I have to balance this with the overhead snare sound, that adds some punch and air to the resulting mixbus snare sound.

I really enjoyed this presentation! Thank you, Warren!

Love the intro. The song has a good feel. Slower BPM’s take patience. The track needs a dark keyboard to glue it together. My 2 pennies.

Tend to use Tokyo Dawn Nova GE for drums due to great control

Favorite kick EQ? When I started developing a consistent workflow, I decided to pick a standard plugin to reach for first. Since the SSL is so universal, I picked the Brainworx SSL 4000E console plugin. I use it for the first touches on all my drums, and anywhere else that doesn't need much, but a quick adjustment/touch up. So if my strings just need a touch of high end, I just go to the SSL. Theory being I will get really effective with that plugin.

I remember using the audiocation compressor on kick drums, wich worked quite well for getting a great sound. EQ either stock or maybe some Variety of Sound BootEQ for some push-pull goodness or Variety of Sound NastyVCS if I wanted to have a simpler setup with Comp/Limiter in the same plugin.

favorite BD EQ.. hmm... either TDR Nova, ReEq (Reaper only) or a DeadDuck channel strip(VST only). Oh.. and very often I put the WHITELabel TENQ on the BD bus.. its weird.. it just works with the default preset on any BD. Unfortunately its not the most stable plugin! (and its VST only windows only).

This was a great! thanks Warren!

Sidenote: is it just me or there something weird going on with that F# bass note? I keep hearing something out of tune or a strange overtone when it plays back.
