White tail Deer Warning Call

I was a bit startled by this call as can be witnessed by the sudden unsteady camera work.

I have a small stretch of woods on the property and I was just hanging out there to de-stress during an overcast dusk, but i saw something moving in the neighboring field. I was sitting down, watching it as carefully and silently as I could without my glasses or a flashlight. I wasn't sure what it was, and i figured it would've smelled or seen me so i didn't know if i was safe. Turns out, it *didn't* see me, and as soon as I heard the footsteps sounding more like sticks and pine needle detritus than grass, I knew it was getting closer and I was McWorried. I stood up to leave, heard THIS sound not knowing it was a deer sound, and it ran away from me and me from it. Very glad my initial "it's probably a deer" was correct, but WOW that noise is scary in the dark when you don't know what it is!

I live in the woods and heard this a few times lately but the deer were hidden in the foliage - glad to come here and confirm it was a white-tailed deer call. Also heard the call along with a hoof stomp, and deer don't 'stomp' unless it's deliberate. I wonder if she has fawns nearby (it's June). It is quite startling!

Had to look it up just to be sure. Earlier this morning (about 4am) I was walking through the wooded area in my town where a river runs through. I was needing some time away from all the city noise. I sat on a log next to the river, and after about 5 minutes I heard that sound behind me. After the initial sound I heard branches snapping as it ran away. Made the hair on my neck stand up because I didn’t know what it was. Afterwards I assumed it was a deer because they’re everywhere here. Freaky sound, especially at night when you’re alone.

Was just watching a doe graze in my back yard while I was on an upper deck watching her. She didn't notice for the longest time but got close to my deck and finally saw me. I turned to go back inside and heard this call, turned around, and she had ran to the woods edge. Was wondering what it was, as I've never heard it before despite having many deer move through the yard.

Sitting here with a bonfire going and I see a nice flock of white tail set up in the distance. The yard large and plenty of grass for grazing. I watched them set up and went back to my music. One of those SOBs did this after realizing I was there a second time. Made me jib up and make the sound back they took off and now I just feel silly 😅

Used to sleep outside with a heated blanket when it was cold in northern Arkansas. This startled me way more than the coyotes when I was trying to fall asleep. Some bigger deer have a louder, deeper chuff.

thank you. this is so cool. 10 pm and i'm hearing screaming coming from the grouping of trees behind me, over and over, was going on for a bit. I had no idea what it could be. Finally I thought of deer and googled their sound, yep, this is definitely it. i'm not at all in a wooded or rural area, i'm like 2 blocks from a major highway and live in a condo development, but there are deer everywhere here in central NJ. obviously there used to be a lot more woods for them. but they're still everywhere now. this is the first time I ever heard that.

Omg I’m not crazy! I was hiking today and heard this and then something running through the brush! I’m glad my suspicions of it being a deer were right.

some deer made this call at me while I was laying in the field so I came to look up what it meant

Was out hunting and saw a buck. It was out of range, ran a few steps and then slowly started walking up the rigdge making similar noises but for a good half a minute.
