From les nuits d’été, or “The nights of summer” a setting of six poems by Théophile Gautier (1811-1872). Berlioz and Gautier were neighbors and friends, and Berlioz chose the poetry from Gautier’s collection La comedie de la mort (The comedy of death). Berlioz completed the cycle in 1841.

L'aviron est d'ivoire,

Le gouvernail d'or fin;
