Gunboat vs Outremer Catamaran Battle!

Gunboat vs Outremer - who will win!?!?

It's not a fair fight. The Gunboat is 66 feet, has 12 foot daggerboards, a much higher mast, larger sail area and carbon fiber reinforced. The Outremer is 51 feet, has 3 foot daggerboards and is made of fiberglass. Let's not even mention the price difference. But now that Gunboat and Outremer are made by the same company in France (Grand Large), it's worth discussing how similar they truly are.

Both are designed with performance as THE priority. Comfort is a close second. Price is clearly less of a concern for Gunboat. Both have very narrow hulls, utilize daggerboards to actually sail upwind and choose a larger sail area over a bridge-deck helm seat. Their bows are both extended, moving the center of gravity back and limit bow displacement that would slow the boats down. The only real difference is how much you are willing to pay for exotic weight saving materials and the stiffness associated with Fiberglass (Gunboat!).

So who won? The Gunboat, silly. Of course it won. And it wasn't really a race, anyway. But still, it was a lot of fun trying to hold the Gunboat off. And I thought you all might enjoy seeing it...

I guess the real question is = which red is nicer?!

ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on a performance catamaran named "Archer" and sharing our adventures in family-friendly episodes on YouTube!

OUR ROUTE: We departed the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States and sailed down to the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal. We have dealt with massive repairs in the South Pacific, the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a Category 5 Cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising in Australia.

OUR PAST: You may remember us as "SV Honeymoon?" Ten years ago ("before kids"), we sailed a Lagoon 380 named Honeymoon halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences via YouTube and, by happenstance, created one of the very first "sailing channels." We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids.

FAQ: More questions? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions page on our website or answers to many of your questions in this 40 minute episode:

PLEASE COMMENT!: As a channel with kids on-board, we are required to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you. Tell us what you think!

Seth, I'm sure that your red is better. Remember the Gunboat probably doesn't have a drone. Makes you an aircraft carrier!!

The Generation 1&2 Gunboats (62' and 66' including Phaedo) aren't actually carbon - the hulls are made of E-glass. The rigs, boards, rudders, and lots of other bits (including some hull stringers, bulkheads, etc) are indeed carbon... but the only truly carbon layups are found in the Gen 3&4 Gunboat 60's and 55's. Nice video and great boat - I love that Outremer! Having sailed and raced Gunboats for the past 3 years, I can tell you that they are not my ideal cruising boat. Absolute maintenance monsters, and too expensive to buy and maintain. The Outremers do a great job of balancing performance, comfort, safety, and simplicity for cruising in my opinion.

Glad to see this pop up in my feed and excited to see you back at it! I first fell in love with the idea of sailing when I found your honeymoon videos years ago. Binge watched them a few times. You are like the godfather of YouTube sailing videos.

Wow! Flashback to your old movies. I can't wait to watch the 6 months of "gold" you have at this point :-)
PS! It's very sad that several of your old movies have been deleted. I guess by Youtube do to legal rights (music). I hope you find time in the future to repost those :-)

Anyway, keep on sailing an have fun!

Love to you all from Norway!

Hi Seth cool video! I love what you've done with your Outremer. I've seen a lot of them launch and you've chosen something unique. Nice job.

I'd just make one small (but important) clarification in the video. Losing a mast is definitely not what Gunboats do or are designed to do. The rig is or should be designed to go all the way to hull fly without breaking. Some limits have been pushed on certain boats and remember any rig on any boat can come down in the wrong conditions or due to human error. I won't go further to compare the two brands because they are simply a very different - and complementing- thing. Hence why grand large bought Gunboat. It is a good family.

Have a blast and sail fast!

Seth, I started watching your video's when you first started the "Honeymoon" series. I loved it and still go back and watch episodes of that series. I'm looking forward to your trip "around the world", we will be watching.

Gunboats are narrow (BOA) so that they lift the windward hulls. Of course, that makes Gunboats easy to capsize.

Phaedo is kind of a superstar amongst gunboats I think

Old School era, 1982 I built a Crowther 45. narrow boards, high wingdeck, full roach full batten. 5000 man hours, airex. Multihulls were laughed at except when we always past on the downwind side. We had cruising sails. At anchor, monohulls would attempt to come close to look but they would go aground as we were in 28" of water with dagger rudders designed by Mr. Newick. If monohullers sailed with us they would try to pad all lose objects to prevent damage then they watch a can of coke sit on the cabin top at 16 knts, , , , GOOOD memories

Hi Seth, Nice video! Are you back? I don't care for the Gunboats, I really like the old 55 where everything was inside just in front of the helm. Two people could easily sail it. Cheers!

Seth, good to see you again.
Your dad is lookin’ good as well.
Our circumnavigation is going well, currently in New Zealand.
We’re taking our time and reaping the benefits of the slow approach.
Off to Fiji in May and will return to NZ next summer.

Is that the same outremer as la vagabonde?? 45'??? Good fast cats, I see you were doing just under 11knots, both the outremer and the gunboat are 25 knot capable boats, good fun I'm sure, I crew on a retired1995 64' Alex Simonis designed Robertson and Caine custom built Cape to Rio boat, very similar to that vintage Volvo and clipper boats, we make 12 knots comfortably (with the cruising headsail arrangement, furling Genoa) only in 15 to 18 knots apparent on the beam, in the '96 Cape to Rio she (SV WARRIOR) averaged 10.4 knots for the crossing, she has the tried and tested ocean racing cockpit layout with twin interlinking pedestal grinders on the 3 speed Lewmar 77 primaries and main sheet winches, 13 cockpit winches including dedicated traveller and running backstay winches, hydraulic backstay, vang and inner forestay, rodded standing rigging, she is old technology racing wise now but still a very fast yacht capable of 25 knots for sure with the required crew for that, and that's probably the biggest difference. Fair winds

Pheado is actually a pretty famous racing Gunboat. She used to be orange though. When did they paint the hull...and why?
