The Telnyashka is worn by the Russian Airborne or "VDV" as a distinctive mark of their perceived elite status.

The shirt's was originally a navy uniform, but gained fame when the Russian Naval infantry fought during World War II.

Russian General General Vasily Margelov chose the Telnyashka for the distinctive unform of the airborne forces during the modernization of the VDV after World War II.

Today, the wearing of the Telnyashka in Russia is considered a to be a sign of masculinity, although the reputation of the Telnyashka has not seemed to hold up with the VDV in Ukraine.

Other units: fancy hat

Gurkhas: giant fucking deadly knife

I like how, among the examples, most of them had a decorative piece of equipment and the Gurkha had a giant knife.

And this is the shirt that generic Russian tuff guy wear in all the movies especially when they have no speaking lines

Due to manpower shortages, WW2 Russian sailors often had to fight as infantry, wearing the striped shirts under their fatigues. Naval infantry (marines) also wore those shirts. Those units often distinguished themselves, giving the shirt it’s cachet.

The VDV are plenty tough, but one cannot expect any unit to fight when cut off from supplies, support, command, and anything resembling a workable plan.

The Russian paratrooper shirt looks like it should be in Jean Paul Gautier ads.

Idk, dropping 200 soldiers into the heart of the capital city’s airport, having them be able to survive for 2 days while waiting for backup, while the estimate was that they couldn’t survive for 10 hours without backup, is pretty telling of their strength, and also how uncoordinated the Russian generals were

That parting line is a wonderful bit savagery. Nice

yea it turns out dropping paratroopers unsupported deep behind enemy lines with no follow on troops is a terrible idea. American 82nd would have a similar result in that situation

Elite doesn’t mean that they’re super soldiers, it just means they’re highly specialized for their particular role.

Paratroopers are a powerful asset, being able to drop in and cause havoc, taking objectives before they’re secured by opposition. Paratroopers are also simultaneously vulnerable, very vulnerable. If ground based forces fail to link with any paratroopers in the field, those paratroopers easily can face annihilation without a way out, or without the big guns to aid them

The Ukrainian marines wear striped shirts as well, it’s why it was a giveaway when Russia said they were parading marines that surrendered, and not one person they showed had the striped shirt, they also had pouches that looked full, not what you leave on actual prisoners.

I dunno if it's fair to say that their toughness didn't stand up to reality. They were parashooted in behind enemy lines without support facing significantly more opposition than expected, it's not like they all just surrendered or rolled over. No military force in the world would win in those same conditions, they're still human after all.

i'm amazed at the amount of disparate random facts you possess in relation to the pictures we all see streaming in from the Ukraine conflict.

It’s weird. Even so far removed from my time in the 82nd as an infantryman I still feel such a strong sense of pride to my old unit and my old maroon beret.

The Maroon beret is more identified by the British Army Paratroopers, where it was first used in service in 1942 :)

It's not just the VDV, the Russian Marines also wear a similar shirt with black stripes.

I believe other units may have their own but these are the main two I know.
