The restricted domain for the secant function was chosen to be [0, pi/2) union [pi, 3pi/2) instead of [0, pi/2) union (pi/2, pi] so that the differentiation formula (Unit 2) for this function would be simpler and an integration technique called Trigonometric Substitution (Unit 1 of Math 22) would be easier to apply.

The restricted domain for the cosecant function was chosen for the same differentiation formula reason, and so that the identity Arcsec x + Arccsc x = pi/2 holds for all x in the common domain of these functions.
