📜 Viking Expansion: Rollo the Walker - Rollo the Walker led the Great Heathen Army and had his sights set on sacking Paris, in a time when relations between the Vikings and the Franks had become, essentially, getting paid to raid. Eventually his sights would turn to stability--and he became the founder of Normandy.

The sack of Paris marks a major turning point in the Viking expansion, a time
when simple coastal raids became full-scale invasions. But it didn’t have to happen that way.

"So why were you baptised?"
"I liked their robes. I got baptised 5 times."

Its pretty insane how this little interaction with Charles and Rollo led to such massive consequences. I mean, France essentially created its own worst enemy for the next 800 years in Norman England. The hundred years war stated because the English king owned lands in France, Normandy. Because of Rollo.

"Even as he ravaged the wine country, Paris was never far from his mind".
I must have been watching too many "Ten Minute History" videos recently, because I immediately envisaged him leaning in with narrowed eyes, while holding up a sign saying "Soon".

I somehow missed that Rollo's forces were remnants of the Great Heathen Army the 1st time I saw this. In a very very roundabout way, Ragnar's men *did* conquer England once and for all. Wow

btw its important to note that while the man that sacked paris was called Ragnar, there is little evidence that he was THE Ragnar Lothbrok

Great video, but I think you confused "ancestor" with "descendant" at 11:08.

Everytime you came with a "but" after one of Rollo's plans, I started fearing for him.

Walking was invented by Rolo the walker in 20633 when he tried to jump with 1 leg 2 times at once

Matt: King Charles the Fat—
Me: Okay, that _can't_ be what they called him.
Matt: —yes, really.
Me: I'm looking that up.
...
REALLY.
