BMW iX: BMWs brave new electric SUV

The arrival of the 2022 BMW iX has not gone unnoticed on the internet. Its exterior styling has certainly divided opinion, but as BMW's flagship electric car it has a hugely important role to play.

In this CarGurus UK review, Vicky Parrott tests the iX xDrive40, prices for which start from just over £75,000. With a range of up to 257 miles for this version of the iX (and 380 miles for the range-topping, £115,000 xDrive 50), range anxiety shouldn't be a problem for most drivers. It can get from 0-62mph in a brisk 6.1 seconds (4.6 seconds for the xDrive 50), and features a beautifully crafted interior, but does the iX xDrive40 also deliver all the space, luxury, comfort and handling prowess that buyers of big BMW SUVs will expect? The controversial 'grille' aside, I quite like the iX40 and the fact that BMW is trying something genuinely different inside and out. But considering the modest range and also some luggage space issues - 500 ltr is probably ok for most people, but could be better and why no front boot? - it's just too expensive. The iX50 has better range (around 380miles), but is ridiculously expensive.

The car's a 'take it or leave it' to my eyes. But the reviewer is a breath of fresh air. Down to earth, and all relevant info relayed clearly and succinctly. I'll be coming back for more of her reviews.

I pre ordered the U.S. Version IX50 at 96, 000 USD. Love the car, everyone and their mom owns a Tesla. The grille is nice in my opinion. The inside interior is sporty yet modern. 310 Miles for the 50. To those complaining about the price. It’s ok, to those their own. I say if you can afford it but it. If not, stick with Tesla with quality control problems, bad paint jobs and loose panels. To their own cup of tea. I frankly trust the BMW build.

I absolutely love this car. In a world of ordinary looking things, it just looks so different. For the target customer I don't think it's hard to justify at all. Fantastic!!!

I don't mind how it looks at all. A very informative review with a good summation of the +s and the -s. Does Vicki do her own ironing ? Her sleeves are always very nicely creased when she's at the wheel.

The boot measurements communicated are incorrect. The 500 number is the volume when those horizontal dividers are in place. When removed, there’s more space than the etron and X5.

I really like BMW cars. I've had one for the last ten years or so, but I can't get Bugs Bunny out of my head every time I see that grill. Just can't get my head round it. 🤔

We got the brand new BMW iX during Christmas time 2021. It is our 4th BMW and we were excited to ride on it. On January 10 2022, the iX made its freeway debut. We would never have thought the first drive would have been a nightmare. My husband drove the iX fine until that moment— about 20 minutes on the freeway. A loud “Bang!” struck us frozen. At that moment, the bonnet hood smashed the front glass! My husband on the driver’s seat, and I next to him, found ourselves being entirely blindfolded by the bonnet hood and were entirely unable to see the traffic. It was a moment of fear, fear of losing our lives.

Test drove one and thought - I’m not spending £75k on this. I walked away feeling sorry for people who’ll be duped to buying one. I thought that the rear end of the car looked good from the outside but that was it.

I can't fault this review Vicky, all very well articulated and does not shy away from the competition either. Would I buy it? Not yet (I can't afford it and those huge mock nostrils will need some getting used to), in a few years time I might consider it used after the electric technology has moved on somewhat and the price may well have dropped enough to be affordable. It really is incredible how far the electric vehicle has move on in a just few years so would be interesting to see how much the technology has plateaued in say 3 years or so time compared to this car.
