ABOUT THE EXPANSE:

The Expanse is an American space opera / mystery science fiction drama television series on Syfy, based on the series of novels by James S. A. Corey. Set in a future where humanity has colonized the Solar System, it follows police detective Miller (Thomas Jane), ship's officer Jim Holden (Steven Strait), and his crew as they unravel a conspiracy that threatens peace across the System and the survival of humanity.

The scientists in the books including Cortazar were put under the influence of drugs to alter their minds/make them sociopaths and they could choose to make the change permanent, which Cortazar did, effectively erasing his previous personality. So this isn't made for the series. The novella is The Vital Abyss. :)

Thanx for the aftershow guys :)

An excellent episode. Sort of "character driven" more than anything else, probably a "slow down and catch your breath" moment between the first two episodes and what is to come :)

Part of what I love when The Expanse is on season is this show. :D

I think you guys made a mistake about the scientists on Phoebe. They were all given a treatment that permanently altered their state of mind to remove everything they once considered to be morality. It is detailed in the Expanse short story "The Vital Abyss" whose main character is the scientist from this episode.

The show didn't explain well why Miller killed Dresden. "He was making too much sense." was almost there, but not quite. I think Miller saw that Fred Johnson and others would be convinced by the guy, and be tempted to go down the path that is in Miller's eyes totally evil. Miller wanted to save them from themselves.

In-group preference, ladies. Human beings are tribalistic by nature, we only trust people who are "like us, " however we define that.

Cara Gee plays Drummer who is Fred Johnson's second in command.

Cortazar was in the novella "The Vital Abyss".

One foible I consistently see with the panelists on AfterBuzz is their misunderstanding of what a spoiler is. Any preview (or even trailer) is, in fact, a spoiler. Whether it's "fair game" for discussion is another matter. But make no mistake about it. Previews are spoilers, PERIOD.

Essentially, they're like flash-forwards without the continuity of actual flash-forwards. The biggest difference is that when the flash-forward (a la certain cold openings of Breaking Bad) occurs in the episode proper, it's part of the "story" that the writers and storytellers are telling the audience. A "flash-forward" in the form of "next time on...", on the other hand is a commercial decision to try to maintain/boost the ratings (at the expense of storylines, scenes, and reveals that the writers (or good writers, at least) have carefully crafted to appear in the sequence in which they unfold.

Again, it's arguable that information from previews (or even interviews) is "fair game" for discussion. But make no mistake. They contain spoilers that the storytellers did not intend to be "revealed" at that juncture. That should inform the decision of whether to discuss their content or not.

For what its worth in your analysis of Amos and the prisoner - Amos in the show and certainly in the books is a child of the sex trade. I don't think he identifies with the prisoner, I think he understands the prisoner in his relating his behavior to pedophiles. His morality is essentially burned out and he relies on others for harder morals, but Amos has hard lines and rules.
