Magical Tetris Challenge - Nintendo 64 Review - HD

Magical Tetris Challenge, known in Japan as Magical Tetris Challenge Featuring Mickey (マジカルテトリスチャレンジ featuring ミッキー Majikaru Tetorisu Charenji Fīcharingu Mikkī), is a puzzle game by Capcom for the Nintendo 64, Game Boy Color and PlayStation (the latter version was released in Japan and Europe only). The Game Boy Color version was undername titled Tetris Adventure Susume Mickey to Nakama-tachi (テトリスアドベンチャー すすめミッキーとなかまたち Tetorisu Adobenchā Susume Mikkī to Nakama-tachi, The Adventure of Tetris with Mickey and Friends). It is a version of Tetris featuring Disney characters. It is one of the few N64 titles to be entirely in 2D.

I disagree. I return to this game every year or so and it still has the same fun and charm that I remember as a kid. This may be nostalgia talking but I love this tetris.

Just like you, I was hoping for some ducktales on N64 and was very disappointed very this puzzle game was announced. I did not played it at the time it was released, but I bought it last year and actually quite enjoyed it. A lot of you review is about multiplayer mode, and that's exactly the fun part of this game !

Probably one of the best Tetris games ever made, iirc the director of BotW worked on it as well back when he was still part of Capcom.

Was kind of disappointed to hear lack of appreciation for it here, I think it is one of the most enjoyable and addicting versions of Tetris.
The sprite work is gorgeous, the music is great imo (really don't understand what this high school musical nonsense is coming from)
and the story mode adds a very decent challenge that I always find a joy to come back to.

It's a great that focuses almost exclusively on versus Tetris and it does that excellently.

*TETRIS 2* was a fine game but many hated it because it was too different.
*The NEW TETRIS* was an intelligent game with an ethnic European Soviet score which had 4 way play, & the ability to create large square blocks for mammoth points by combining symmetrical pieces together. You got Silver for mixed, or GOLD if you created the block using 4 of the same piece.
*Magical Tetris* appealed to the crazy Tet-fans! You had to react to your friend by getting many lines at once or consecutively. This is called "Counter-Lines" & things could get very frantic VERY fast! It also has UP-DOWN Tetris which is very addictive because instead of crazy pieces, it pushes a flat floor up from underneath! It has 1 narrow gap though for Tetric or Pentris if you manage to clear the floor & use elongated pieces!

I recommend playing all the above in that order. Tetris 2 has flashing blocks too! Very cool!

This game got lot of attention, simply as it was from Capcom. But ultimately this game`s message was, buy this and then you will get Resident Evil, ect...

This was pretty fun. I prefer 'The New Tetris'. I put so much time into that, quite recently too. It's good to play at 4 in the morning after a few bottles of wine.

I remember really hating this game afterwards since the game didn't even have memory card support. Another Magical Quest game would have been so much better but maybe Capcom thought it would have been too difficult to make on the N64.

Hey Glenn, nice review. However, if you think the best Tetris ever was for the Game Boy you might want to try Tetris DS.

I've never played it myself, but it had a variety of modes with many levels inspired by classic NES franchises like Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc. It allows 10 players to play download mode off one card, and supported online play for the now defunct Nintendo Wi-fi Connection.

I've often seen it listed as one of the best versions of Tetris, and no doubt has more features than the original while not alienating the game from it's roots.

This is a diferent take on tetris for sure my friend but i do agree with you that it is aimed for kids and the capcom game that i wanted to see on the n64 has to be ducktales as well
