Hello everyone! 👏 Today we are talking about the brand new stonecutter a bit. I believe the stonecutter may mean a lot, and reveal a lot, for the future of the game potentially. What do you think the stonecutter means for the game? What do you think of this new crafting block in general?

What do you think about the stonecutter?

The scrollbar could just be for players adding custom crafting recipes to the stonecutter

I completely agree the new crafting along side the new textures and mechanics, is starting to give us a realy clear picture about what the direction they are going with these updates

Can't wait to see what other things go a similar path!

I'm entirely open to this new way of crafting.
Unlike the 1.9 pvp downdate, this way of crafting does not destroy crafting as a whole. In fact, this lets players be able to save resources if/when they decide they want to make a stone brick castle. They will no longer need to mine 18 octillion pieces of cobblestone, followed by smelting all of them, followed by making too much brick blocks and not enough stairs, resulting in them needing to mine 12 septillion more pieces of cobblestone just for them to make their cool castle.
As for the potential saw block, the only thing I don't want to happen is to change the way doors and trap doors are made. Or, at least, not having them be made in the same fashion. 1 planks for 2 slabs is much different then 1 planks for a 2 block tall door, when one plank will also make a 1 block tall/wide trap door. Just doesn't seem balanced. I also feel that wood should not need specific blocks/tools in order to make wood-related things. Wood should be left as a material that can be used to all of its potential by a player just starting out. I should be able to make torches and fences to prevent mobs from murdering me on the first night, and I should be able to easily make wooden doors for me to make my day 1 hobbit hole that is also my mine shaft.

TLDR: YAY new stone cutter stuff! Meh wood cutter stuff! Wood remains basic and easy to use by new players / in new worlds!!

Ok, I am going tread on toes here so feel free to yell at me if you want. :) Let me preface this by saying I have been playing Minecraft since 1.2.5 so it has been a while. I also have play a myriad of other survival type of games, so I am quite familiar with the genre. I was also a programmer back in the day, and while I did boring business software, I wrote a handful of games as a hobby so I have some understanding of game design and implementation. This is going to ge a long post so if you don't like to read, here is the short version: Crafting blocks = more stuff to do in the game, Yay!

So, why the different blocks? The answer is quite simple. The recipe system as it is currently implemented in the game, is a mess. If you don't think so, pull up the recipe book and start flipping through all the pages. I haven't counted the number of recipes there are but it is a boat load; so many in fact, they had to add the recipe book, which tells you quite a bit about the problem.

It has gotten to the point of being unmanageable, not just from a players perspective but I imagine from a coding perspective. Right now we have a 3x3 grid and the programmers have to figure a new configuration for the new blocks they want to add, and of course it has to be unique so as not to conflict with an existing recipe. Can you imagine how hard that is now, and how hard it will be in the future? From a feature point of view, this is a major limitation.

What do you do if you want to add a compound structure to the game? A vehicle of some sort for example? Are you really going to use a crafting table? You could but it would have to be a multiple crafting process otherwise it just seems a bit too simplistic.

By moving away from the 3x3 grid Mojang has the opportunity to add a whole lot of content that would be a lot more interesting in the game, like vehicles or multiple block structures, while simplifying both the code and the playability of the game. And, and this is always overlooked, it adds some real depth to the game as well. To me it is much more interesting to have a stone cutter and wood cutter, than it is to have a wooden box in the corner.

Just from a playability standpoint, we now have the opportunity to add a stone shop to our worlds that have a real function and aren't just window dressing. The same for the other blocks. By just adding these blocks, we now have a whole new set of projects that we can do in our worlds that did not exist before. Real projects with real functionality. That is the essence of the survival genre after all.

Imagine building a cart to hook up to a horse using a wood cutter for the body, a leather working block for the reins, a new type of anvil to make the wheels. You could then assemble the cart in the crafting grid or an assembly block and now you have a working vehicle and mobile storage system. And you have a ton of extra playability that did not exist before. It offers new building possibilities, it makes horses actually useful and makes the game much more interesting.

I always hear about how bored people get with Minecraft. That is because of the limited depth of the game. We now have more depth to the game, more stuff we can do, and if the current trend continues, a lot more stuff in the future. I find it extremely exciting and I personally am all for the new block - based crafting system. And with Hytale coming out, Microsoft needs to add more depth to the game if they want to remain relevant and competitive in the growing survival genre.

Good points. And yeah, a circular saw for wood would be good.

this is the crafting station I've been waiting for, I was nervous about things like the smithing table and the fletching table, but I knew this was going to be good from the moment I saw it

The scroll bar is added for data packs so you can add a lot of stuff from e.g. stone :D

I think that when putting in more items at once you should be able to get "extra" stairs, etc.
here's how it would work:

1 block - > 1 stair (+ 1/4 of it is left over)
2 block - > 2 stair (+ 1/2 of it is left over)
3 block - > 4 stair (uses the 3/4 left over)

Now if crafting stair amounts that don't divide by three, the 1/4 or 1/2 remainder will just be thrown out.

I think it would be nice to have some stone patterns that you can only make with the specialized tool that is the stone cutter.

I am hoping we will get sideways slabs but I agree the stone cutter kind of means we have to have a wood cutter to other wise anyone with a wood house would be screwed. Or seen as super rich giving how much it takes.

Hey wattles, can you tell me a good resource pack you enjoy ?? thanks ly

As a person who uses stone brick around the clock, I'd say I like it especially since it's more proficient at making stairs than the crafting table.

I like the efficiency of it, makes things MUCH easier. Definitely need a wood cutter now.

Did you notice that the stonecutter doesn't provide pressure plates or buttons?

They should add a duamond to the stone cutter repice bc it would be like diamond saw they use for cutting stone irl

TrolliNaattori

Hopefully they add a woodcutter indeed. But what they should also do is to make stairs etc from concrete...

I played mc when the old stonecutter was in the game and then it had a version
