SEMI-Realistic Brook Trout Fly!

This is a simplified version of the realistic brook trout fly I tied a while back. A lot of people didn’t realize that fly was more intended for art. While you could fish it, it wouldn’t be ideal due to casting issues, durability, the hard fins causing spin, and how time consuming it is to make. However, with so much interest in fishing this pattern, I decided to make a simplified version that I would absolutely stock in my fly box. Realistic flies can look great, but they’re very time-consuming, so using a fly like this, which gets the job done and presents the shape and color of a brook trout, is really all you need. So here you go! I haven’t fished this one yet, but next time I’m after big brook trout this fall, I’ll definitely be giving it a try!

Question? I noticed you didn't anchor the zonker strip with the brassy wire. Would that not effect the endurance of the fly catching fish?

The only changes to this that I use in the UK are. A shorter shank hook. Two wire ribs. One as you used it. The second before the throat hackle. Pull over the zonker strip. Comb up the fibres to vertical after securing at the head. Then wind second rib around as extra security for the zonker strip. Then add throat hackle. Eyes either stuck on or black then a drop of white varnish or resin followed by clear varnish or resin. Other options are white strip or either use a black sharpie to add bars depending on what bait fish you are imitating. As ever only giving options on how these are often used in the UK the longer hook shank versions are used when targeting Pike. Larger and ferox Brown trout.
