He tells the story so pleasingly in his book. It’s smooth and enjoyable. He’s a very efficient and effective writer. He’s like the great Paul Johnson. And he’s got the wit too.

I am reading this book - the very first by David McCullough I have ever read.  I don't know why I was so curious about the Wright Brothers to make this my first book by Mr. McCullough, but it sure won't be my last.  Maybe it is because I remember Mr. McCullough from his hosting of the PBS shows - I don't know, but I am fascinated by the Wright Brothers.  It makes even more interesting that I can see films about the Wright Brothers and  their flying their first flight right here on youtube.  Where else could you see something like that after having read about it.  We are living in a miraculous time!!

What a shame Wilbur had an early death. He died in 1912 of typhoid fever. Some say he was the cleverest of the pair. The early lead in America was somewhat taken over by France. Particularly by the designs of Louis Bleriot, His craft were the first with the more "conventional" layout. Tractor monoplanes, instead of the pusher canard biplanes the Wrights used.
