In the final episode of Context India, we examine how the Indian healthcare sector crumbled under the pressure of the second wave of COVID-19.

We speak with Srinath Reddy, the president of the Public Health Foundation of India, and Malini Aisola, the co-convenor of the All India Drug Action Network, to understand the issues of insufficient investment in public healthcare, the severe shortage of oxygen in many parts of India, and India’s vaccine policy.

Host Faye D’Souza also discusses India’s healthcare challenges - in the short and long term - with Sudhanshu Mittal, the national spokesman of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sujatha Rao, the former secretary of health.

We close with an excerpt of a Punjabi song by artist Vipul Verma, titled Mahamaari which translates to ‘Pandemic’.

Al Jazeera so obviously it will be negative regarding India. But India did fantastic during the first wave. Also made vaccines for the whole world. However the 2nd wave in India is unique to anywhere else in the world as it was caused by the double mutant.

The double mutant is over 50% more transmissible and can evade vaccine-induced immunity. Forget any Politian, even WHO could not anticipate this huge rise in numbers.

Amazing how at 5:34 you are talking about the "religious gathering" and showing snippets of a gathering and elections that took place in 2021 but not about 2020 Tablighi Jamaat COVID-19 hotspot in Delhi when COVID was in full swing!!!

India's health care system has two sides. 1) brilliant private hospitals and private healthcare set-up that is mostly unaffordable to majority of the population 2) inadequate urban public health care system. Neglected and low financial support.

I would love to see a regular, permanent series on Indian politics. It's a massive subject that the wider world doesn't know too much about.

India's vaccination drive has been a success and it was expected from the beginning as india is the single largest producer and developer of vaccines but the public health care system was bound to collapse in a serious outbreak and it nearly did. It's high time that budget on public health care system must be increased.

Which health system of the world didn’t face challenges during Covid crisis. Most advanced economies like the US and France were under deep stress and panic. Unlike in other nations, our private healthcare system in most cities, especially in small towns, took the crisis as a time to make money. A false shortage of beds to gain more profits from people under panic became a norm. Being someone associated with healthcare, I give full marks to the government across the country for their handling of the crisis. Only fact is private system didn’t rise to the occasion.

India's healthsector is weak yet to many Bangladeshies, Indian healthservice is a dream. such worse is health system of Bangladesh, worst health sector in the entire world. Millions of Bangladeshies every year run to India for health services. Al Jazeera should do a report on how Bangladesh is becoming a failed state.
