Only the second woman to serve on the US Supreme Court, she led the way, beginning in the 1970s, in pursuing legal remedies for discrimination against American women and girls. At the same time, she developed a singular public voice and presence; atypical of Supreme Court justices and, as such, becoming a widely, and wildly, iconic figure in pop culture.
