Look at the depth to which most of these statues were buried, also consider several statues have been found off the cost in the sea at depth as if they were originally erected there when it was’Dry Land’. All this suggests the statues and the polygonal walls were built when Easter Island was connected to mainland Brazil/Peru 12, 000 years ago just before the Younger Dryas event that bought about the extinction of ‘Mega Fauna’ such as Mammoths and sabre tooth tigers and increased world wide sea levels by several Metres. So, Why leave out the polygonal masonry and the under water statues?

I think they were there to discourage sailors coming on their Island may be thinking that Giants lived on that island many superstitions came about in those times so it makes a lot of sense to me that people felt safe for by building these statues and placing him on the ocean front ⚔️

The Moai facing outward are Tōhunga prayer and chant performers that could also call sea creatures to shore and control weather patterns.
Rapanui is technically a giant Marae and there are deities and hidden shrines everywhere as some shrines were just basic dirt structures and completely disappeared.
They also had a magical stone that coupled with a particular chant could control Mauri that's anything with a life force even mineral..so getting food was not a problem.
But the trees were cleared on purpose as the islands purpose was to be completely stone!

Here's a thought: Picture this; YOU are a partially-naked "fire-starter" inhabiting the "MAIN-LAND"(Maybe Pangaea). ALL around you is unpredictable People-eating monsters that are faster, stronger, and maybe even a few that are "smarter"(pack/strategically) than you are... You've lost countless "friends and family"(Regardless, of the "emotional-loss", the times you are living in are likely quite reliant on each pair of hands and feet for many different reasons. So, "Losses" could add up quickly and leave YOU and the remaining worthless "nuckle-heads" quite desperate and scared.
I'm a firm believer in inarguable repeating-patterns in every aspect of life on earth that can, and often are, quite accurate when used as tools to predict or explain the unknown. Given YOUR desire to survive, preferably "Happy and peacefully", Desperation and hopelessness could have pushed you and the remaining dummies out into the water on floating "fire-carriers" in an attempt to get away from the unpredictable forests and jungles.... "Hey Look, an Island far away from that land. AND a place where you can clearly be conscious of your surroundings AND where the majority of anything that relies on legs isn't presently there. You should also build some really big scary people-shaped rock-things to help scare off any of the flying crap.
