WTF Happened to Planet of the Apes?

For most of us, the “Planet of the Apes” movies have always been around. Spanning five decades and ten movies - and counting - it’s hard to imagine a world without that race of hyper-intelligent monkeys and their everlasting war against man. We take this extended universe for granted, but it wasn’t always this way. It’s probably not hard to believe that at one time, the concept of a world populated by talking apes wasn’t thought of as a box office draw, and if it hadn’t been for the determination of a handful of true believers in the material, we may never have gotten one movie, let alone an entire franchise. So let’s go back in time a bit to a world without Dr. Zaius and the gang and find out WTF Happened to “Planet of the Apes.”

One of my all time favorite franchises. I saw the original on tv in the 90's and then was constantly renting all 5 from my local video store. I remember they had them in the 'cult classics' section.

I can’t think about this movie without singing “Doctor Zaius Doctor Zaius, Doctor Zaius Doctor Zaius”

As someone who has watched all 9 Planet Of The Apes movies, & I have noticed that the 3 Andy Serkis movies are essentially reboots of the 3rd, 4th, & 5th Roddy McDowall movies; Rise (2011) is Escape (1971), Dawn (2014) is Conquest (1972), & War (2017) is Battle (1973). The teaser for Kingdom makes me hopeful that we will get modern day reboots of the Original (1968) & Beneath (1970) as well.

The first time I saw Linda Harrison as Nova, I was smitten, and she didn't even have to say a word...

I played the original 1968 film for my 20 something y/o neighbor and the ending blew her mind. She also remarked on the quality of the ape makeup. This movie still packs a strong punch.

Roddy McDowell was the MVP of the Planet of the Apes. Playing both Cornelius in the first and third and his son, Ceasar; in the last two.

The best way for someone to see this movie the first time is without knowing it exists and seeing no trailer and not being told the name of the movie.

Good vid overall BUT when Schaffner is mentioned, Karl Malden is shown. Also, when Kim Hunter is mentioned, Bette Davis is shown.

There was an episode of "Lost in Space" called "Fugitives in Space" where the Robinson men are in jail with an alien named "Creech." His makeup was a Ape prototype that John Chambers (who worked on the show) had from Planet of the Apes.

Why do these Planet of the Apes reviews continually show Karl Malden at the awards when they're talking about Schaffner? This is at least the second time I've seen this happen.

Don Murray, who played the governor in the Conquest for the Planet of the Apes, passed away today. RIP.

I loved every single film as a kid and bought the dvd box set for an anniversary edition. If you love it, you love it 🎉

Honestly, I think the Andi Serkis trilogy isn't necessarily a "reboot", but more of "the ORIGINAL" timeline that lead to the Original 5 movies. Yes, there are some inconsistencies, such as what year the Liberty ship launched, which contained Taylor and his crew (and Brent's expedition to find him was never mentioned, but there WAS a long time jump between Rise and Dawn).
Cornelius, Zira, and Dr. Milo travelling back in time "reset" the events, because they technically brought the "virus" that made Apes smart to begin with, with them. That kinda "retcons/explains" how the apes went from "primitive" to "higher order" in the span of less than 20 years. But I'm okay with it. It also explains, in part, how the humans in the original movie are "animal like", and the "nuclear war" that took place altered some humans in a way that made them resistant to the virus and mutated their DNA for Beneath.
It's a little convoluted, but the most recent trilogy can still fit in with the original 5 movies. I'm waiting to see what we get with Kingdom, as it could very well set the stage for the original 5 movies even more.
The only real "outlier" is the Mark Wahlberg movie, which is pretty much a "self-contained" story. It was also (in real life) a "proof of concept" and "gauge of interest" movie.
Also, also, does anyone watch the fan-made "Evening with Dr. Z" (I think that's what it's called) show that's on YouTube? It's pretty amusing, and is directly related to the Original movies in the context of the makeup work. It's kinda like an "Ape version" of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, except "Dr. Z" (looks a lot like Dr. Zaius, but obviously doesn't use that name so he doesn't get sued) is the host of the show.

I honestly am not a fan of the new ones. They're interesting from a technical point of view. But they're just hollow in the ways that count

What happened? It's a talk show with Dr. Z now. 3:00 Isn't that Karl Malden?
