For anyone who didn't catch this live: The graphics screwed up during the last shot of Pete Davidson and it was just a shot of his face on a black screen. Thought I'd mention it in case anyone was confused why the cast appeared so goofy at the end.

The trouble started at 00:13. The space gun falling on the floor made it impossible to continue the plot so Steve improvised saying " Oh hell yes" rather then "No" at 2:18, and you can see the genuine reaction Melissa, then something went wrong with the green screen with Pete at 2:35...
What a beautiful mess

I think everybody assumes the mis-cue to Pete (and the lack of FX filter on the shot back on him) was what killed the sketch, but a small technical glitch isn't what destroys the structure of a sketch. From the accounts I've heard on this, the laser gun that drops to the floor in the early seconds was a crucial prop for the resolution of the scene, and they were able to make it through ok right up until the point when it was supposed to be used. Carell was supposed to pull the gun on the Klergs and save the Kern. So when that's supposed to happen, Carell seems to have changed a written "hell no" response to an improvised "hell yes, " (which is why Melissa looks shocked and even Kenan's eye's seem to do a double-take as he gets ready to work with whatever Steve is about to do.) With everything that had already gone wrong in the sketch (the prop falling, Cecily's guffaw, Kenan's chuckle and pooched line, the awkward timing of the sound cues and cutaways to Pete, then Steve's ad-lib, ) the mis-cue back to Pete with no FX on him was just the straw that broke the camel's back for the cast, I'm pretty sure.

The most curious part, for my money, is how much of the action after that was from the original script. Leslie, Kenan and Pete didn't improvise their lines; they were clearly written, and the ending music cue was supposed to be there, too. Everything after that was off the cuff and the cast just sat there and prayed the sketch would just hurry up and die a quick death. It's rare to see an SNL sketch go so completely off the rails, but it's always a treat for us when it happens. (Likely not for anybody who's in it, but that's part of the fun with this gig, isn't it?) ;-)

Very interesting they removed the big technical glitch with Pete. With it cut out it makes even less sense. With it in at least you knew this skit had gone to hell and they were going to do whatever to get out quick

Cecily and Beck meet eyes at the beginning, right after she says "oh, you mean the Klergs?" and they both look like they are already ready to start laughing.

For everyone who is confused, at 0:13 a ray gun prop falls from where it is supposed to be used later in the skit to kill the Klergs and save the Kern. That is why the ending is so awkward; Steve Carell had to completely improvise the end with the rest of the cast. Also during the live show, the special effects on Pete Davidson stopped working and that's why everyone is breaking and aborting the sketch at the end.
