HOW TO INSTALL RESILIENT CHANNEL AND REDUCE VIBRATION NOISE

preview_player
Показать описание
Installing resilient channel (res channel) is an effective low cost method for reducing sound transmission through walls and ceilings. It is installed perpendicular to the ceiling joists and wall studs. Res channel is suitable to use in multiple unit buildings, recording studios, and to improve room to room sound transmission . Drywall only touches the resilient channel ensuring sound transmission never travels through the wood (houses) or steel structure (condo). It can be used for both wall and ceiling applications. The product used in this video is manufactured by Bailey and costs approximately $4.20 CND per 12 ft length.

Material List:
- Resilient channel
- Measuring tape
- Tin snips
- Impact driver or drill
- Pencil or marker
- 1 ¼ " type w pan head screws (for wood studs or joists)
- 10mm (3/8") type s pan head screws (for steel studs or joists)

Very nice video. I only have one suggestion. Measure 16” from the wall on your second channel if you are putting first one 1/4” or 1/2” or more from the wall that way your 4th channel’s center will be exactly at 48” or 8th channel at 96”( the width or length of standard drywall) if you measure 16” from the first, you might be off center later on and run into more problems. Cheers.

I'm currently soundproofing a wall that adjoins two bedrooms. Considered using the resilient channel, but I was concerned about the limited load bearing capability (large flat screen TV, etc). So I've decided to go with soundproofing insulation and two 5/8" drywall boards on one side (1/2" drywall is already in place on one side), putty on the boxes, and green glue in between the boards.

My granny definitely employed this advice.

thanks for such a detailed work! one question: you said the flange of the piece thats close to the wall needs to be away from the wall, and the NEXT piece be the opposite. but what about all other pieces coming after? should they be installed so their flanges are in an alternating order?

I’m confused.
Bailey RC plus says run the channel 24” on centre for 16” on center ceiling joists. They don’t mention alternating the channel as you have suggested but, you can see they didn’t alternate it in the video. Also they say the channel should be 4-6” away from the walls in their literature but, don’t mention anything in the video. They do recommend the screws you suggest but, show their installers using drywall screws!??! Lol I just want to get this right, any input would be great! Great videos btw.

Great video. However, if I wanted to install 2 - layers of 5/8" drywall to the RC, will that application be too heavy for the RC?

Great Video, will be following your way for Soundproofing my basement ceiling: Question : My Electrician has completed the wiring and installed the Pot Light Rough-In Plate directly to the Joist. When I Install the Res Channel, i would need to bring the Pot Light Plate down by 1/2 inch, to be in line with the Res Channel, what is your recommendation for that. Thanks

Great video. Does would strapping help out at all? I have shorter ceilings so I’m trying to avoid strapping plus the channels if possible.

Great video! If you are running your ceiling continuous above your partitions for fire separation, what would you typically do if you wanted to get all your partitions in place before fully drywalling the ceiling? Just run a res. channel parallel above the location of the partition, put a strip of drywall on it then stand up your walls below that?

Love you video. It help me install my resilient channel on my ceiling. I have a question. I’m about to install a 2nd layer of drywall with green glue. Does the screw for the 2nd layer need to go through the channels or would it be ok to put the through the first layer. Thanks in advance.

Very good video.

I've heard that if you're installing pot lights and you're surrounding them with insulation like in this video, you need a certain type of pot light? I don't suppose you could tell us the make/model you used in this video as I'd like to get ones for my basement that are adjustable like you showed.

Also, my basement ceiling isn't level, so I 1x4 strapping with shims between it and the joists to level the ceiling to the strapping. Do I install the res channel in line with the strapping, or across the strapping?

Thanks!

Thanks for the video! I've no idea how much of a difference it may make but I read earlier today that instead of overlapping the channels it is also a good idea to keep a 1/16th inch gap between them to ensure greater isolation.

Great video thanks!, Question, I am installing resilient Channel only on the Ceiling in my home unfinished basement.Question
#1. What comes first, add Ceiling drywall first or wall drywall then ceiling drywall.
#2. Should my wall drywall extend and touch the ceiling wood joists.then add ceiling drywall.
#3. Should the ceiling drywall touch the wall drywall or should there be a 1/4" gap to allow floating / prevent contact then mud over the gap and close it.
