1:25 The reaction time from this mechanic though, hasn't even fallen to the ground yet and he's pulled out his extinguisher and saved his teammate's neck and head from severe burns

Good to have a great crew on that day they did an amazing job getting the fire put out.

A safety filter on the fuel valve had been removed. It was designed to greatly reduce risk of fire, but added a full second to pit stop times. But the crew was so well-trained, they were countering the fire before it ignited.
The fire is what happens when you cut corners. The fact that no one was seriously injured is what happens when you *don't* cut corners.

Just getting into F1, and I find it eerie that this was yet another incident in the 1994 season. What an awful year that must have been as a motorsport fan

Matchett described this in brilliant detail in his book. Some mechanics were badly injured, one of them got some of the fuel dripping under his goggles (for lack of a better term) and when the blaze started...thankfully most got away with smoke inhilation and nasty but repairable burns. Sparco brought out the new, safer fireproof outfits that year and everyone complained that it was "unncecessary". They didn't complain after this. Schumacher went pale when he saw what the fire did to the car.

1994 was really the worst season of F1. Ratzenberger's and Senna's death, near-fatal accidents for Barrichello, Brundle and Wendlinger, and this...

Man if this went wrong there wouldn't be a Max Verstappen either.

@1:25 you can see Jos waving his arms around with flames coming from his overall, what a terrifying sight. It's in slow-motion later around 2:32.

Jos Verstappen: 3 seconds in fire
Niki Lauda: 1 minute in fire

both survived

In 1994 Jos Verstappen could have died twice. Max was born in 1997.

Both fires horrific although I should stress out that Romain Grosjean’s situation was much much worse after crashing from 200+km/h with no immediate personnel to help. He had to sit in inferno and think and decide what to do after a shunt inside full blown fire 🔥. He spent much longer inside flames/fire than Jos Verstapen did (3-4 seconds). Just proves progress in fire proof F1 overalls.
