The Savior’s sermon on the mount continues.

Matthew 5:17-20
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven."

There’s a lot to unpack there, so I’ll try with the last verse and then work backwards. Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

This is no longer a statement of what you are. This is an implication of what you are not.

That would have taken the wind out of a lot of people’s sails, especially those who thought entrance to the kingdom could be earned through acts of righteousness. These were words of conviction; words that would lead people to slump their shoulders and say, “Then there’s no heaven for me, because I’m not righteous.” Certainly not as righteous as the Pharisees. They were the people looked up to and said, “We need to be like them.” It would be like if Jesus said, “You have to be better behaved than an eagle scout or a nun if you want to go to heaven.

Who is possibly more righteous and obedient than them? If that’s the bare minimum, we’ve got no shot.

This righteousness is given, not earned, to all who believe.
