Another good way I found to do this was to rewrite 1 as x/x to get (x+1)/x under the root. This allows you to cancel the sqrt(x) in the denominator with the one in the numerator, leaving you with the integral of 2sqrt(x+1) dx which is much easier to deal with

I tried just writing x^1/2 as sqrt(x) and multiplying through to get in the integral sqrt(x+1), and then doing reversing the chain rule and i got the same answer. Hopefully that works as an easier method.
