I love seeing these videos explain "how to become fluent in English" when you need to be fluent already to understand the video.

To all English learners out there: remember that the majority of native speakers can’t speak fluently about everything. It’s a skill that needs to be practiced, just like everything else.

Edit: just to elaborate, your fluency is going to depend directly on your understanding of the topic. Understanding is a relatively long process, it involves listening, processing, critiquing, and internalizing the content. For example, a native speaker who doesn’t have a clue about psychology can watch a 30 minute lecture Jordan Peterson lecture about the ego, and yet not be able to articulate in proper sentences what they’ve learnt. It would take weeks of watching similarly themed content and reflecting upon it regularly, that a native speaker would be able to begin talking about psychology semi-coherently on an amateur level. Even then practice with a partner might be necessary, to find a speaking style that works for you (writing a book helps a lot).

This is because for every new field or sphere you come across, it’s gonna have its own set of jargon that you’ve never heard of before, and words that you’ve heard before but used in a completely novel way. Before that becomes internalized, there’s no way a native speaker would be able to output about the same topic with any sort of clarity or structure. If they try to do that, it comes across really obvious that they don’t know what the hell they’re saying, and are just smoking their way through.

In essence, understanding is the basis of fluency, and if you don’t understand what other people are saying with regard to a subject matter, chances are you won’t understand what you’re saying yourself. Fluent output on specialized topics is something that comes way later in your language learning journey, maybe even up to 5 years later, and if you’re only a beginner about 6 months in, quite frankly it’s gonna be a huge waste of time. Prioritize input above output, understanding others over trying to get others to understand you. Once you can watch the average English YouTube video without the help of subtitles, and are confidence that you’ve understood 99% of ideas expressed, then you can start concerning yourself with the skills that native speakers would learn in school, like explaining yourself fluently during a presentation, or writing an essay.

I am native hindi speaker, and can say that tis is proven technique. I have personaly used following technique.
1. Learn the words and imagine a scenario of ur own day to day work, where would u have been used if u had to?
2. Learn the words in prases, never memories a single words keep in prases and sentences. It will stick in ur mind.
3. Open ur mouth, dosnt matter of grammer is ok or not, just speak it. Gradually u yourself will correct ur mistakes. And u will have confident.
4. Note down the new words in notepad, describe it a little with examples and context.
Remember u dont need to learn all the vocabs just few words that help in speaking..
As the instrctture is speaking very normal words, we all understand, bit if i ask u to speak same things probably most of us will not be able to speak.
So note down words, and keep reviewing tje notes once a while.

This video just popped in my feed and out of all the English lessons that I've been watching since last month, this one's the most valuable. I'm grateful that your videos came out of woodwork to help me when I needed it the most.

When i saw you for the first time, I thought actor Tom Hanks had switched his carrer and started teaching English on Youtube. I like your teaching esp when you burst out a laughter heartily while teaching.

I speak english fluently and everyday at work. I stumbled across this video and got curious because i never really understood how I learned english, and looking back, this makes a lot of sense. These are not all that useful for me in terms of learning but really this is awesome work that you're doing here. Keep it up!

as an English learner for almost 10 year, I'm glad I finally see this video, this video solves my puzzles that haunt me all these years, liked your EFL tutorial on learning vocabularies in a vertical angle, just to dig in deeper, this approach will definitely change my way of learning new vocabs, thanks again

I think the essence of mastering any foreign language is to learn the context -- just as kids do.

Best teacher ever, I've been learning Eng since, Eng has always been mysterious to me, I have been using expressions, vocabs, idioms, but I can't understand what they truly mean, I just mimic and use grammar structures correcly, yet the meaning is always eccentric, honestly your way is the best to understand, God bless u <3
