Kudos to Galanza for a spectacular all around game. She really is a magic bunot. Without her good defense alas can't run a good offense.

Of course kudos as well to my bias Alyssa Solomon. You really are the future. Keep improving Alyssa. I really want to see you someday play in the international league. So much potential.

Sisi always deliver.

Jia good ball distribution.

And let's not forget the entire Alas team.

Congratulations to the team! Their hard work and sacrifices have finally paid off, and this is just the beginning. What is good about this team is they are relatively young - as compared to Thailand, they have 4 players who are 30 and above, the oldest being their libero Piyanut who is 34. For Alas, only Nunag is above 30 (age 32). The next is Jia at 29, and most are in their mid- to early 20s. This could mean they will potentially stay with the national squad for the next 5-10 years, barring any health or other issues.

I'm sure after all 4 tournaments they have participated this year as a new team, including their time in training and friendly games, the coaching staff did their assessment as to the potential and the areas for improvement. Don't know if any of their staff read the comments section. Having witnessed all of their games (via livestream or replay), here are my observed pearls and pitfalls:

1. The team has a good mix of veteran and young players with high potential, especially Angel Canino, Gagate, Solomon and Panique. The young ones are tall and mostly agile. They just need to develop more consistency, and by joining high level competitions, they will gain their confidence.

2. The team has a good setter who's also a dedicated leader, knowing how to focus her teammates in a calm and focused manner.

3. In terms of leadership, they are going towards the direction of adjusting the local leagues according to FIVB's recommended national and local team window, so that the players can concentrate on their national team duties.

4. They need to keep a consistent pool of players, similar to what other countries are doing. Thailand lists 23 players in their national squad, while team USA has more than 30 listed under their current roster. This is to have identified players who can be called upon in case some of the other players are unavailable for a particular competition. These players will already be familiar with the system and have chemistry developed among them during training. Casey Dongallo is a good addition. They need another setter. For libero, i think based on past performance, Detdet Pepito should be included. I would really like to see Shevana Laput, but not sure regarding her citizenship, if she is listed as a Filipino citizen. A crucial addition would be a tall and dominating middle blocker in the mold of Jaja Santiago. A good move would be to branch out to Pinoys in other countries, like what Gilas has successfully done in the past, and what the Alas men's are now doing.

5. They need to improve in their speed - Thailand and Vietnam's set and transition plays are really fast. The blockers are hardly in position to even have a hand on the ball. The spike technique of Ajcharaporn, Catchu-on and Pimpichaya - the pivot point for the spike is the shoulder joint. They do not bend their body backwards that much. This makes the spike faster because the shoulder joint is smaller as compared to the lumbo-sacral joints, hence it takes less time to flex. They can do this because they are taller, jump higher, and possibly have stronger arm and latissimus muscles. Their approach can be shorter, and they jump vertically. (Compare this to the traditional approach made by Valdez, Maraguinot, or Galanza, for example, when they take off for a backrow attack - at the highest point before hitting the ball, their bodies are maximally extended, forming a letter C). You can appreciate this more if you do a slo-mo video capture.

6. I noted their price for winning the bronze in leg 1 was 11000 USD, equivalent to more than 600k PHP. Hope they will use it to improve the team - example, hire a team nutritionist-dietician, a regular team doctor, invest in data, AI, statistics and technology (that can analyze the scoring and defense patterns of each spiker and of their opponents; that can compute for the most ideal body mass index), and the like, and not just for team-building activities, although that helps also. Maybe the prize for the 2nd leg is also 11000 USD.

7. Invest in coaching workshop/training. I noticed a lot of netizens calling for the resignation of the current head coach, and to replace him with a Pinoy coach. I respect their opinion on this, but foreign coaches in both national and local teams are not a new thing. In fact, the Japan men's volleyball team who won silver in the recent VNL has a French coach, for example. There are pros and cons - the advantage would be the transfer of technology and collaboration with other leagues. If we want to elevate the coaching capacity of local coaches, then the schools or teams should invest in continuing education for their coaches so they can be up to par with international standards.

Personally, i'm happy for Galanza, who i think redeemed herself with her performance. Some may comment that she proved her bashers wrong, but in reality, i don't think any athlete plays to prove their bashers wrong - they do it for the love of the sport, and for the love of their country/team/school.
