I'd rather a brew of Yunnan golden monkey any day

I do tend to see more whole leaf processing in first flush darjeelings, and it’s good you haven’t given up on sourcing darjeelings since only tea in that region seems to have that specific peppery floral aftershave note
In recent years I’ve had a few Nepalese first flush style teas that were better than the Darjeelings I found in the same year… so that may be worth trying

So you're saying it tastes like a commodiTEA?

Darjeeling definitely suits the western brew method over gong fu. I’ve had good and bad ones for sure, you can’t tell until you brew some unfortunately!

I only like Darjeeling for western/grandpa style brewing

Actually, I tend to agree.
I have had a few Darjeeling’s, at first, I just thought that I was steeping incorrectly.
I don’t know, they are tricky, in fact they do escape me a bit, even now.
I typically use them to make chai now.

You aren't wrong. I've always felt this way, and I always get flack for that opinion

It can't be all bad if it is still in its colonial history

This shouldn‘t make you unpopular at all because what you‘re saying is that they COULD make wonderful teas if they really tried it rather than continuing with the cheaper established processes. From an economic pov, they play safe and ensure stable cash flows by serving the existing mainstream market instead of taking risks by trying to convince consumers to buy a much better but also significantly more expensive product. But those who are still willing to try it could help revolutionizing the Western tea market and end up being very successful with it.

Controversial indeed, but I respect your opinion eventhough I disagree with you. You are not entirely wrong, however, I must admit 😅
