Does the 8 block principle also apply to the end if a portal is created? Or is it completely different?

I found a fortress in the nether and I want to link it to my home portal. Is that possible? Since when i make a portal near the Fortress I tend to travel thousands of blocks from my main base. An it's on survival. Not so fun to run/boat.
