LEGENDARY BANDS
Black Uhuru is a Jamaican reggae band that stood out for hits like "Shine Eye Girl", "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," "Sinsemilla", "Solidarity", and "What Is Life?", Winning a Grammy in reggae category when it was introduced at the awards in 1985.
The original name of the band was Black Sounds Uhuru (uhuru means "freedom" in suaílie African language), and was given by Stan 'Roy Scientist' Palmer. The first formation of the band was composed by Garth Dennis, Don Carlos, and Derrick "Duckie" Simpson.
The group went through several lineup changes since then; Carlos went out, and was replaced by Michael Rose; Dennis then left to play with the band Wailing Souls, and in its place came Errol Nelson.
During this initial period the most famous recording of the band was the album called Love Crisis, which was later re-released with the name of Black Sounds Of Freedom.
In 1979 Sandra "Puma" Jones, a social worker in South Carolina, United States, joined the band. This training - Rose, Simpson and Jones - joined the Sly & Robbie producers (who also became bassist and drummer), and launched the most popular albums of the band's history: Sinsemilla, Red, Chill Out and Anthem, who won the Grammy as well as others. During this period the band became one of the most popular groups in the world reggae, making constant touring with bands like The Clash, The Police and The Rolling Stones. Live 1984 record of a show held at Rockpalast in Germany on 18 October 1981, captured the band at the height of its strength.
In 1989 the album Red reached the 23rd place on the list of 100 greatest albums of the 1980s made by Rolling Stone magazine.
