A stunning hotel in the centre of Bangkok that has retained its original features from the 1960s. The Miami Hotel on Sukhumvit Road was built in 1965 at the height of the Vietnam War catering for American GIs visiting the region – hence the city’s name being used as the name. Since, then, many of the original properties from the period have been demolished and the land sold off to developers, with tower blocks and shopping malls replacing them. But the Miami’s owner, Ton, has turned down ‘’eight figure sums’’ in dollars to part with his beloved hotel, which has been in the family for three generations. Incredibly, design lover Ton has retained the hotels original 1960s architecture as well as furnishings such as desks, clocks, lamps, leather chairs, jukebox, telephone switchboard, beds and tables. As well as holidaymaker staying, many fashion catalogue and magazine shoots now take place at the hotel to capture the authentic vintage look.Video footage, set to royaly music, captures the retro appeal of the hotel, which still welcomes guests from around the world. In keeping with some of the more colourful traditions from Bangkok, rooms are also available for ''short time'' three hour stays, allowing men to visit for brief encounters with the women and cross-dressing men that proliferate on the roads outside. Ton added: ''We've seen it all at this hotel over the years. GIs in the 60s and tourists in the present day. Some of the things that have happened here, you would not believe.''
