Connections 431 - NYT Word Game - 15 August 2024 #connections

The New York Times is back with another new daily word game, Connections! This is heavily inspired by "The Wall" from the BBC quiz show Only Connect. You must sort the sixteen given words into thematically appropriate groups of four--and you only have a few opportunities for error! I don't know if I'll be solving this every day but I'm giving it a shot for now at least. We'll see how it goes. Let me know how you like it!

I really struggled with this one today. Total blank for 5 minutes just to get stated

I was so sure that there was a missing word for ___ BOOK with match, check, and phone that I couldnt see past it and failed today

No problem getting the purple today. At first glance at the puzzle i was thinking CELL BLANK ... mate, match, phone
After solving the other groups PAY BLANK was not too dificult. I only heard of pay dirt a few years ago. Use to play a slot machine at the casino called pay dirt. It had a kind of gold rush theme.

Tough one for non-Americans today. Never heard of Natty or Sierra beer. Then I couldn't get purple either as I forgot cheque could be spelt that way across the pond and had never heard of Paydirt so that one may be an American saying too?
