Britain absolutely must put on a spectacular funeral for the Queen. It is what Britain does. The royal family are obscenely rich and should in fairness pay for it all themselves.
But over the 20th century, it seems the British taxpayers got stuck with the bill for all the tradition and pageantry. (...on top of paying for the government and wars.)

...sorry, it's the mourning cattiness. 🐈‍⬛

I don't think there's much point in carping on about the cost of the Queen's funeral. There are more important and fundamental reasons to want to see the end of the monarchy than just the cost of the whole shebang.

Since you brought Africa up, kenya! Tell me what did her military do in kenya in her name only months after she became queen?

Thank you, as an American, The Queen has been an example of the many things we should strive to do. She led by calm, strength. Service, charity unparalleled. Her speech during lockdown gave me hope when it seemed everything was gloom. Rest now sweet Lady

The queen’s conduct over 70 years has been exemplary and non political. Something her heirs will not be able to do. She gave her life to public service. She led a frugal life and her faith was her bedrock. The nation loved her.

Every country is entitled to their own hobbies, especially when the are deeply rooted in their history. And the Queen was a marvellous queen. The baffling amount of sorrow and grief, both nationally as internationationally pays tribute to this.

I am no supporter of the royal family, but Queen Liz I had a soft spot for.
As for Charles and the rest I return to my anti monarchy stance.

I wonder how many of those who are offended about the expense of the Queen's funeral turned down Covid Furlough handouts?

The Queen brought in millions upon millions of pounds into the country every year for 70 years. Most of these people don't understand that the revenues would be sent to the Treasury for the benefit of their own country. She was so popular with most of the world, because her true character often shone from her actions and kind, often moving sincere words.

I think asking why we are spending hundreds of millions on one person’s funeral is a legitimate question when we are told by the government that we can’t afford to extend free school meals to ensure the poorest children in this supposedly rich country are fed.

A barrister arrested for holding up a blank sign outside parliament yesterday. (Testing the waters)
Its gone viral.

Didn't we get upset when that happened in Moscow a few months back..

Dear Professor Tim.
May I refer you to the Royal propaganda that has been churned out over the last Twelve months through television broadcast.
How Camilla won the heart of the nation being one such repeated broadcast.
We all loved the Queen, but when Royal propaganda is being constantly fed, I start to question why ?

You a good man and even better man for putting the records straight. We are all behind you.

I think the discussion about the person of the late Queen and the future of the monarchy are quite separate.
We must recognise and value 70 years of service, not least as head of state. Goodness knows the deep and lasting value that has been and will be to the country, hundreds of personal relationships with other heads and politicians. And also the influence behind closed doors in UK politics, after all it was Her government (s). We may think the country is in a bad state now, could it have been a whole lot worse without this particular monarch.
I am very concerned about the apparent slip into neoliberalism, maybe even fascism. Also the abuse of privilege. Politics needs more reform than the monarchy.

I always encourage that people research for themselves.
Because a news channel invites selected guest to relate their view, they are not proving fact, but merely being presented to influence your own thinking

Thank you for setting the record straight. I cheered you on during the interview for Turkish television

Any idea if the royals could afford this send off and not miss it ?

The majority of comments I've seen all over YouTube have their roots in sheer ignorance.
I'm not a royalist, I don't know what the Royal family actually do. But at least I'm self-aware in the fact that I don't know. What I do know about is the Charities different members have been involved in. I know the Queen worked hard right up to the day before she died! so I don't see how anyone can call them freeloaders.
I also wouldn't say nasty horrible things about someone just after they've died, and that's someone's Grandmother. I don't know why people can't leave their nasty comments until at least after the traditional mourning period out of respect for people who are genuinely upset.
I haven't heard anyone moan about the expense of the ceremony though. I hope some changes are made to the Royal family and their role in a 21st Century Britain, but for now, can we just pay our respects and be allowed to feel sad that someone so iconic has gone.
