I think after a while I would refuse. What's more important the surprise or how you disappointed her over and over. It must have been pretty embarrassing to her the first few times when she took it seriously only to find he was laughing. She might have slapped him and acted like it was funny too but part of her would have been hurt. It turned out okay in the end but honestly people this wouldn't be the way to go.
