Historic events before the 20th century always seem so far away, and then I'm reminded how many people who lived during the American Civil War lived long enough to be recorded in motion picture, or to see the events around the 1st World War. It makes me wonder how many who fought in the Revolutionary War or witnessed those times must have been around to witness the Civil War.

I also believe that he was saved by Edwin Booth (John Wilkes's brother) who was traveling with John T. Ford (owner of Ford's Theatre) from getting run over by a train in NJ during the war

Wow. My grandmother was born before he died… History is a lot closer than we think it is.

I've been to the McLean House at Appomattox CH. I knew that Robert had been in the room (as had George Custer, among others), but I learned that Robert was the last witness to the signing of the surrender of the Army of N. Virginia. You're the best Lance.

Respect for this channel. There’s volumes more to honest Abe. Lincoln had 4 sons total, 3 died relatively young. Robert took on responsibility for his mother, Mary Todd, after Abe’s death. This is also fascinating history. Abe Lincoln is an American legend. Thanks for sharing.

It's always hard on a kid growing up with a dad as busy as Lincoln was, but Robert ended up a good bloke nonetheless.

His desk is in the lobby of the Ada county courthouse in Boise, Idaho.

Apparently Wilbur McClain owned the land that the first shots of the Civil war started on also

Fascinating- and then to see him in his last years being assisted up the steps for the ceremony of the Lincoln Memorial.

He was also present during the first three presidential assassination. During McKinley‘s assassination, he was just in the next building. After that, he said he would not stay around presidents after that.

I found out a few years ago, that on my Dad's paternal side, I am the 5th cousin, 5 times removed, of Ulysses S. Grant. I had always wanted an important historical figure to be related to, and now I am.

You ignore the most interesting set of coincidences in Robert Todd Lincoln's life.

His father invited Robert to Ford's Theater that fateful night in April 1865, but Robert declined.

Prsident James Garfield named Lincoln as his Secretary of War. Garfield was leaving Washington, and sent word to Lincoln to meet him at the train station. While the two men were speaking, Garfield was shot and collapsed into Lincoln's arms.

In 1901, President William McKinley visited the Pan American Exhibition in Buffalo, New York. McKinley invited Lincoln to join the president's party. Lincoln was about a hundred yards away when McKinley was fatally shot.

So, in Robert Todd Lincoln's lifetime, three presidents were assassinated, and each one had invited Lincoln to be present.

Lincoln family has known much sadness. Abraham Lincoln was a great president. A self-made man.
