The only way I'd blame the educational system is that these people never learned to think. Having been a science teacher for almost 40 years, the system only cares if they pass a test instead of actually understanding anything.

As a retired teacher, it isn't the educational system. Parents need to instill a love of learning and a respect for it. AND, as a student you need to pay attention and try. I saw far too many students who felt that all they had to do was take up space in the classroom and not actually try at all. They'd starve to death in front of a buffet full of food because they wouldn't reach out and pick up the food and eat it. At some point, you have to be an active participant in your own education. What is responsible is a big one to try and break down.

It comes down to shared personality traits I think- primarily ones having to do with distrust/paranoia/suspicion of professionals and institutions and feelings of being “special” and genuinely believing they are more intelligent and perceptive/observant than others.
