Yep, whenever you see two variables next to each other, like AB, that means A multiplied by B. If it's 2Y, that means 2 multiplied by Y.

if you must; enclose "chi" within parenthesis and have consistent spacing, then no confusion will ensue

Yeah. Same goes for the first part of the second example. "(-1)(2) = -2"
It's called "implied multiplication".

I have a question in the first example:
a = 5 and b = 7

When you put a b - 3 = ?
Why a b are multiplying if there is no symbol " · "? Is always like that?
