Weimar
Weimar (pronounced Vaimar) is a town in Thuringia, Germany with a population of 64,361 (2005).
In 1775 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was summoned to Weimar, where he became a minister (in German: Geheimrat) of Prince Karl August.
The period of German history between 1919 and 1933 is known as the "Weimarer Republik". Here a national assembly agreed to produce a new constitution, after the German monarchy was abolished following the defeat of the nation in the First World War.
The Bauhaus University of Weimar (Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, BUW) is a university for creative studies based in Weimar. Between 1919 and 1921 it was renamed the Staatliches Bauhaus, briefly known as the Bauhaus. It has been the site of the European Summer Academy since 1993.
The Bauhaus building in Weimar was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996, and the old historic center of the city in 1998.
