A million people download new NHS contact-tracing app on day of launch - BBC News

The new NHS contact tracing app has been launched in England and Wales. Anyone over 16 is being encouraged to download it on to their smartphone.

It can warn you if you've been in close contact with someone who is infected.

But the Health Secretary for England Matt Hancock says it won't be a legal requirement for people to isolate if the app tells you to.

Meanwhile students at universities in Scotland have been told they'll break the law, if they leave their accommodation and return home to stay with their families.

It comes after a major coronavirus outbreak at Glasgow University where more than 170 cases have been confirmed. More than a thousand students are estimated to be self isolating after outbreaks in Dundee, St Andrews and Aberdeen.

In England, the new curfew restrictions announced by the Prime Minister have come into force.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by medical editor Fergus Walsh, Scotland editor Sarah Smith and Duncan Kennedy in Southampton.

Ten years ago they tagged early release prisoners, and now they're expecting to do it to ordinary law abiding citizens (in the name of keeping you safe), and people are OK with that? LOL!

No, I will not be downloading the app. I've been a victim of this disclosure of personal information and who gets to see it. I lost a driving licence that I'd held for 40 years, entirely clean - not one speeding fine or parking violation - simply because I notified the UK Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority of my late diagnosis of Asperger's, aged 56. 40 years of safe and lawful driving - and my licence taken away for doing nothing else except being honest. Don't let them know ANYTHING. Keep it to yourself.

Vallance, Whitty and Hancock are completely compromised. This is a sham.

There’s a special kind of stupid person that downloads an app that will make it far, far easier to issue them with a fine and the fact that it’s already full of bugs and doesn’t work properly won’t help either.
