Q1) What are Fallopian Tubes? 0:17

A) Fallopian tubes are two very fine tubes on either side of the uterus which carries a mature egg and motile sperms.

Q2) What is Fallopian Tube Blockage? 0:28

A) A Fallopian Tube Blockage is any obstruction in the tubes that prevents the egg from travelling down the uterus and also prevents the sperm from reaching the egg thus affecting fertilisation and pregnancy. This can occur in one or both the tubes and is the cause of female infertility in 40% of cases.

Q3) What are the Symptoms of a Blocked Fallopian Tube? 0:54

A) 1) A blocked fallopian tube rarely causes any symptoms. Most women don’t even know they have blocked tubes until they try to get pregnant and then face difficulty in conceiving.

2) But a type of blocked fallopian tube due to infection known as hydrosalpinx causes the tube to swell with infected fluid and may cause lower abdominal pain and unusual vaginal discharge.

Q4) What are the Causes of Fallopian Tube Blockage? 1:25

A) The common causes of a blocked fallopian tube are:
• Pelvic inflammatory diseases
• Tuberculosis
• Sexually transmitted diseases
• A previous surgery of fallopian tube
• A previous ectopic pregnancy
• Congenital tubal obstruction
• Endometriosis and adhesions

Q5) How Fallopian Tube Blockage can be Diagnosed? 1:46

A) Blocked tubes are diagnosed with a specialised X-ray called a hysterosalpingogram which involves placing a dye through the cervix and taking X-rays of the pelvic region. If there is no blockage the dye will go through the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and spill into pelvic cavity. If the dye doesn’t get through the tubes, then there might be a blockage.

Q6) Is Fallopian Tube Test Painful? 2:13

A) It depends, some women have mild to moderate cramping. But if the tubes are blocked the dye can cause pressure which can eventually lead to discomfort and pain.

Q7) What is the Treatment for Blocked Fallopian Tube? 2:27

A) a) If tubes are blocked by small amounts of scar tissue, laparoscopy surgery is recommended to check and open the tubes.

b) If tubes are severely damaged then it is advisable to proceed with IVF technology.

Q8) What are the Chances of Pregnancy after Fallopian tube Blockage Treatment? 2:46

A) The chance of pregnancy are good if tubal blockage is bypassed with IVF technology provided other factors like sperm, egg and womb are normal.
