Layers of Pericardium Anatomy || Fibrous Pericardium Layer || Serous Pericardium Layer

The pericardium is a fibrous sac that surrounds the heart and great vessels and has two layers:

- Fibrous pericardium:
The tough, outermost layer made of connective tissue that prevents the heart from expanding too much. It's conical-shaped and fuses with the roots of the great vessels at the base of the heart. It's also attached to the diaphragm and holds the heart in place in the chest cavity.
- Serous pericardium:
The inner layer, which is further divided into two more layers: the visceral and parietal layers:
Parietal layer: The outer layer that's firmly attached to the fibrous pericardium.
Visceral layer: The innermost layer that directly covers the heart and the roots of the great vessels. It's also called the epicardium, which is one of the three layers of the heart wall
