My mom was the prettyYOUNG mom. I have a picture of her...single, in gogo boots after her work as a cocktail waitress c. 1969.
We lived in a tiny country city or little big town however you look at it.
I always wondered why my mom would belt this out while she did her ironing or cooked dinner before she split. Later, that pic in the go go boots enlightened me just a little. Thanks for the post. Great memories of the "wonder years" of my life.

Oh memories of being sent to the principal office for my dress my sister sewed/made for me. It was so pretty
She made two. One black bottom with top in black and white checkerboard pattern finished off with a thin red belt.
The other olive green with a thin yellow belt.
I was so happy to wear it. A teacher who happened to tagged me for my length of the dress made me kneel down to see if the hem touched the ground. It didn't.. it was an inch above my knee.
She was furious and sent me to the office. I was scared. I was Always the one to obey.
I can't remember what happen in the office. But I think I was told I had to lower the hem.
When I got home I told me sister who made my dress. She was furious.
The teacher was her good friend and even served in her wedding.
My sister is a very outspoken person. She called up the teacher and chewed her up.
I was scared. I was caught in the middle.
Like the daughter in the song.
My sister refused to lower the hem. I went back to school no more rebuke from that teacher
😁.

But as the story goes..
We all sin and try to condone a sin.
Finding faults in everyone to make your fault look ok.
The story never ends.

single mothers are still very stigmatized to this very day, and it is very hard in a small town, especially one where your income is lower than the other families. This song is 1968 and so that was a time when there was not as much help for single mothers or even low income families. Instead they were stigmatized, and faced many repercussions, and emotional torture.

I was in High School when this came out. This cut was extremely popular and made the top charts. We used to "JAM" off it.
