Alex is right, 90's Honda's and civics in particular had a raw quality that was hard to beat.Rev happy and communicative, lighter.Downside of course less refinement, crash protection and corrosion resistance.Only a museum would have a (21 year old)mint example with 2000 miles on the odo.

I understand where you are coming from. We have a C6 corvette with a 6spd manual. It's slower than the C8, has a worse interior, less amenities and doesn't draw as much attention. But it is such a pleasure to drive and has that raw, old-school driving experience that is lacking in pretty much every new vehicle.

The 99 Civic SI is a classic for a reason: simple, elegant, fast, well made, and reliable. When I was in high school in 99, if you had a civic SI, you were the king.

I’m guessing that high revving 1.6L engine is related to the one in my first car (that I bought with my own money): 1987 Acura Integra. To this day, one of the best and most fun cars I have ever owned. Hearing that VTEC kick in at high revs never got old.

Owner of a 99 Black SI. Fun car only car I pull 125mph stable before getting pull over (young and dumb). However personally didn't love it. Seat too high for my 6ft2 legs to fit under the column to do heel and toe. Great revving out for fun but get way too much noise (hi rev) or too under power (low rev) when just cruising around town. No ABS with my immaturity and inexperience was a dangerous combo; tires locked up on a wet down hill turn and crashed luckily not injured and not totaled.
Also that was the only car I''d owned that need to tow back to dealer and interior trims rattle like crazy.

For almost 20 yrs I've been rockin a 97 Prelude SH and also own a modern 1.5T CRV. Obviously not the same comparison, but rowing that 5sp stick paired to an old rev-happy NA Vtec is just so fun. The steering wheel, stick, seat fabric, and overall controls on that old and new civic are very recognizable to me... If I were to replace the old lude one day, Idk that it would be with this current SI and that's kinda sad.

Alex, I hope this museum Civic SI has had its Takata airbags changed. A modern SI with a naturally aspirated engine making 100 hp per liter like the '99 would be very impressive. Finally, modern mainstream cars have become so low to the ground that you have to drop into them and crawl out of them.

Alex, maybe for next year you can include numerical scores to include other areas like value, interior, fit and finish, technology etc with a overall numerical score. That way we can compare it better against others in the segment. You could then each year compare it to previous winners and find out how well they stack against the benchmark.

90s Civic that does not look like it crashed trough wallmart car accessories, home improvement and handcrafts aisles, sadly can be found only in a museum. Which is sad it was such a good design
