Crash Pad Double Swag Review | Setup and Packdown

We took this swag through 4 states over 2 weeks. It's the Crashpad King Double swag in Forest. It comes in around $519 on the Crashpad website and came within a week of ordering it. It's a 3 pole set-up, has a double flap opening with a mesh screen on both sides, and a 70mm foam mattress. It also comes with pegs and a carry bag. It's 205cm long, 150cm wide and 80cm high when setup, so it's a big swag. Plenty of room for star-fishing. Now that we've gotten past the details, let's get into the experience.
It was my first swag experience so I was lucky to have someone with me who knew how to set it up in the initial stages. By setting it up I mean the wet down and pack away before we even started our trip. It came in a neat box, about half the size of Alex, and was compressed into its packaging. The fun part is unwrapping it and watching the mattress expand. Once we had that out, it got dragged out onto the grass and hosed down. It didn't come with any instructions but apparently, that's how you get a swag ready for use. Once it had dried, it was ready to go on the car.
First things first, if you have a car the size of mine, don’t expect it to fit in the basket. In my case, it did not fit in the basket. But with some scout-level tie-down action, the swag was securely attached to the roof. We set off on our trip and it went a bit like this.
The first night we arrived in Mildura and set up the swag, no issues. But then, in the morning, the plastic buckle snapped when we went to pack up. Of course I was a bit sad, my new swag already had a blowout. I sent Crashpad an email and we used a tie-down to hold the swag-burrito together for the time being.
Several hours later, we arrived in Maree and set up our swag. Now this next photo is a bit of a scary one but we had carried a stow-away with us from our garage in Jindabyne. That's impressive, the spider found a spot in the swag to stay safe for 2 days…
The trip continued and we had the swag set-up and pack down at around 3 minutes. It was easy to get into its bag and the big straps make it easy to carry and throw on the roof of the car. It was always nice knowing we had a comfy little swag to come back to after exploring and it was easy to set up and pack down.
Set-up – Set-up is easy. Pull it off the roof of the car, unzip the oversized swag-storage-bag and pull it out to your tarp or grassy patch. It comes with 3 poles that you snap in on either end and one for the middle. Each pole is lightweight and easy to use.
Pack-down – Easy enough to pack down if you are used to rolling things up. The burrito straps as I call them, the wrap straps for when you are storing it did have an issue on the trip. The buckle part exploded. I am not sure if it was the cold, me pulling too hard to try and secure the swag burrito or something else but it snapped and I was pretty peeved. However, a few days later I got a reply from Crashpad and they sent out two new pieces to our halfway point and the swag was saved! So great customer service on their part.
Fabric – Strong, sturdy ripstop fabric that is waterproof and windproof. It isn’t a lightweight piece of equipment like a tent but it's more like a tiny bedroom. It was dark inside and felt more like a capsule hotel.
Mattress – I had been sleeping on the Aldi self-inflating mattress before this and it was really a step up into some camping luxury. 70mm doesn't seem like much but paired with a nice pillow and a warm blanket, I felt rested every night.
Extras – The door flaps were a great way to ventilate overnight and let in some light. They are also easy to open thanks to those YKK zips and easy to find in the dark.
Overall- I love it! It's a great size to share with another person. Easy to set up and pack down. I like the colour and it was warm on the inside and the mattress was comfy. It is a heavy piece of equipment but if you want somewhere to sleep that is warm, comfy, and easy to set up, then a Crashpad swag might be your answer.
