Ancient Coins: The Julio-Claudians

Between 23BC to 68AD, the first dynasty of Roman Emperors, the Julio-Claudians reigned in Rome, and established what we know as the Romans Empire from the ashes of the old republic.

These are some fascinating characters, from the great Augustus, to the cripple, but very competent Claudius, all the way to villains such as Caligula and Nero. Today, lets take a look at one coin from each of these emperors.

Another great video! I have two Julio-Claudians - a Divvs Augustus & a Claudius. Looking to complete the line. The Divvs Augustus was my first Roman coin that I purchased over 50 years ago.

That’s a nice Libertas type As of Claudius. I just managed to get the Minerva type As of Claudius just recently and it looks spectacular. I also have a soft spot for Claudius too since he is so interesting. Him and Augustus are my favorite Julio-Claudian emperors. You should definitely do this with the Flavians too. I just got a Vespasian Dupondius too that has an interesting history. It’s a rare one without a radiate crown and also has a caduceus and Cornucopia on the reverse. If you haven’t heard of it I would recommend looking it up. Thank you and happy New Year!

Currently on the hunt for some affordable Julio-Claudian coins, specifically Tiberius, Caligula, and Claudius. I’ve got an Augustus COL NEM bronze from Nemausus, and a Temple of Janus Nero As.

Edit: I should clarify that my collection reaches beyond these two coins of Augustus and Nero, there are 33 other Imperial Roman coins.

Happy New Year to everyone watching and to a great channel.
(BTW - if anyone out there has not seen the famous BBC 1970s adaptation of Robert Graves's two novels of the Julio-Claudian dynasty "I, Claudius" - you should ! - about as good as TV gets. 13 X 50 minute episodes - and they are all on YouTube)

Great and informative video, plus beautiful coins! I also got the Augustus coin from Lugdunum mint, as well as the Tribute penny in my collection. I've always wondered why denarii of Claudius are so rare and expensive? He ruled for 13 years, didn't suffer damnatio memoriae like Caligula, and the empire wasn't bankrupt or in short supply of silver. So why so few denarii of his survive?

I've been assembling a portrait collection of these men in silver, and it's quite a task to balance quality w/ affordability. That said, some of their silver coins are less popular in the market: the provincial issues of Caligula and Claudius (Ephesus, Cappadocia, Antioch) are manageable, but I don't bother budgeting for their denarii, since specimens in just a mediocre grade are quite pricey.

As always, very informative. I was wondering what is the difference between a sestertius and an As?

I have a Libertas coin of Claudius, but nothing like yours! I really recommend Robert Graves's books, I Claudius and Claudius the God

Great video! I’m just getting into numismatics and do you know any good types of medieval coins from somewhere like France?

Caligula was a great emperor, his horse was more qualified than the plebs and senators.
